Used vs New Appliances: Is It Worth Buying Used in Saskatoon?

If you're outfitting a kitchen, laundry room, or rental property in Saskatoon, you've probably asked yourself: is buying used actually worth it? The short answer is — almost always yes, with a few exceptions. Here's the honest math.

The Savings Are Real

A new French door refrigerator in Saskatoon routinely runs $2,000–$3,500. A tested used French door fridge at SMS Appliances typically sells for $800–$1,400. That's a 40–60% saving on the same brand, same functionality, often with years of useful life remaining.

Multiply that across a full kitchen and laundry set — fridge, stove, dishwasher, washer, dryer — and you can save $3,000–$5,000+ by buying used. For a first home in Willowgrove or a rental property in Sutherland, that's meaningful money.

Lifespan: Used vs New

Most major appliances are designed for 10–15 years of service. A 4-year-old used fridge likely has 6–11 years of life left. The math gets even better when you remember that older appliances are often more repairable than newer ones — fewer proprietary electronic boards, more standard parts.

Warranty & Peace of Mind

The biggest concern we hear is: "What if it breaks?" That's why every used appliance at SMS Appliances is fully tested and inspected before it reaches our floor, and every sale is backed by our warranty. You're not buying blind — you're buying a unit we've already vetted.

When It Makes Sense to Buy New

We'd be the first to tell you: sometimes new makes more sense. Consider buying new if:

• You need a very specific finish or panel-ready integration
• You want a long manufacturer's warranty on a high-end model
• You're replacing an appliance in a brand-new home and want matching sets

For everyone else — Saskatoon homeowners, landlords, students, and budget-conscious families — used is almost always the right call.

The Bottom Line

Buying used from a reputable Saskatoon dealer with testing and warranty coverage delivers the same performance as new at 40–60% off. Browse our live inventory or call (306) 914-6606 with any questions.
